There are many beautiful walks from the pub doorstep or a short drive away and numerous places of historical interest in the area, along with game fishing, shooting, and sightseeing in Shaftesbury or the nearby city of Salisbury.

A wide selection of country houses and gardens are situated in the area. Most notably, the Larmer Tree Gardens,
Chettle House, Phillips House, Cranbourne Manor Gardens, Kingston Lacey House and Gardens, Longleat House, Lulworth Castle, Salisbury Cathedral, Stourhead Gardens and Wilton House.
 
 
 
  Directions to The Compasses Inn  
     
  From the East.  
  Exit the A303 westbound about 1.5miles after the A36 Salisbury and Wilton exit, where the dual carriageway becomes a single carriageway up the hill. Take the local left hand exit signposted to Teffont and Chilmark. After 2-3miles, at the T-junction, with the Black Dog on your left, turn right and then immediately left. Follow the road through Chilmark and beyond towards Tisbury for another 2-3 miles. You will come to another T-junction where you turn left towards Salisbury and Chicksgrove. Passing the water treatment works and then Chicksgrove quarry on your right you arrive in Chicksgrove village. Look out for a marked 'single track road' on the right, also signposted to Sutton Row and Sutton Mandeville. Turn here and The Compasses Inn is half a mile up the road on the right.  
     
  From the West.  
  Exit the A303 signposted Hindon and A350 Blandford and continue to the village of Hindon. In Hindon take the right turning at the Angel Inn and Lamb Inn crossroads, towards Tisbury. Follow this road for approximately 3 miles into Tisbury and take the first left down into Cuffs Lane. The Cross Inn will be seen on your right hand side at the junction. Follow this road for two and a half miles into Chicksgrove, past the quarry. Look out for a marked 'single track road' on the right, also signposted to Sutton Row and Sutton Mandeville. Turn here and The Compasses Inn is half a mile up the road on the right.  
     
  From the South  
  Take the A30 west of Salisbury towards Shaftesbury. One and a half miles West of Fovant take the third local right hand turning signposted Chicksgrove and Sutton Mandeville. Follow for half a mile to the brow of the hill and then take the left hand turning into Lagpond Lane. The Compasses Inn is about one mile down this single-track lane on the left hand side.  
     
  From the North.  
  Join the A303 and use the directions for either West or East as above.  
     
  Trains  
  Tisbury station is two miles away and offers amongst others a direct route from Waterloo.
